The Venetian Resort History

The Venetian Resort: where art and history combine with luxury and excitement.

Completed in 1999, The Venetian Resort Las Vegas was envisioned as a tribute to the famed city of Venice, Italy, the location of the honeymoon of Mr. Sheldon and Dr. Miriam Adelson. To recreate the city’s landmarks and charm, artists, architects, and experts conducted extensive research in Venice. To ensure every last detail of The Venetian Resort was faithful to the original.

To achieve that goal, authentic materials were imported and artisans commissioned to bring Venice to Las Vegas. Verde St. Denis, a green stone found in the Italian Alps is used throughout the resort. The 25-foot-high columns in the main colonnade are solid Botticino marble. The frescoes that adorn the ceilings were hand painted by Italian artists. The three-dimensional pattern on the floor in the colonnade was hand fitted with Italian marble. This was to perfectly replicate the floor of the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario.

This attention to detail has made The Venetian Resort a remarkable work of art and architecture. We invite you to explore the treasures of The Venetian Resort. Marvel at our homage to one of the world’s unique and great cities.

The essence of Old-world Venice, including original Baroque inspired murals, trompe l'oeil ornament, and decorative finishes covering approximately 50,000 square feet of ceilings and walls throughout the hotel. As well as the design, construction, and gilding was replicated with great accuracy. If you’d like to learn more, please speak with the concierge about available tours.

Inspired by Love

While honeymooning in Venice, Italy, founder Mr. Sheldon Adelson’s wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, suggested, “If you can bring the romantic atmosphere of Venice with all the luxuries that can only be found in Las Vegas, then it can be a winner.”

The Beginning

In 1996, the Sands Hotel was imploded to make room for The Venetian Resort. To ensure every detail was faithful to Venice, the city that inspired the resort, artists and architects traveled to Venice, Italy, to study the iconic landmarks and charms of one of the world’s most romantic cities.

Old World Meets New World

Authentic materials were imported, and talented artists were commissioned to bring Venice to life in Las Vegas. For instance, the frescoes that adorn the ceilings were hand-painted by Italian artists and the three-dimensional pattern on the floor of the Grand Colonnade is a perfect replica of the floor in the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario.

Las Vegas Strip Debut

Completed in 1999, The Venetian Resort opened to classic Italian fanfare. The themed resort was a success. According to Fortune magazine, it’s credited with fueling “the overall renaissance of Las Vegas itself.”
